Why everyone should be seeing a psychiatrist.

Often people are skeptical when I start to argue that everyone should have a psychiatrist the same way everyone should see a dentist, but when you pause to think about it for a moment it actually makes a lot of sense.  We all know, that preventing problems or at least identifying them early, is the best way to stay healthy and to avoid a long and painful path to recovering from any serious condition.

So why not apply that to mental health?  We meet with our psychiatrist on a regular basis for a mental health “check-up”.  During the check-up, we review healthy habits to makes sure we are doing all the things we need to maintain optimal health.  We can also pick up on things as they might be starting to brew and intervene early, usually being able to avoid medications because we have caught things early.

Finally, the other advantage to seeing someone regularly is that you have a psychiatrist that knows you and your history and is someone you can trust because you know them.  If one of those unexpected things strikes any of us, we can just pick up the phone and call the doctor we know and trust and get started addressing things right away.

Finally, though many of my patients come to me initially for device about medications, many end up seeing me for weekly therapy because my holistic approach that includes advice about all aspects of life really resonates with them.
